What is Namsoong? A Harvest of Gratitude and a New Beginning.
Namsoong is a profoundly important harvest festival and the New Year celebration for the Lepcha community. It marks the successful culmination of the paddy and millet harvest season, serving as a heartfelt expression of gratitude to nature and the deities for their bountiful yield. More than just a harvest festival, Namsoong also ushers in the Lepcha New Year, a time for new beginnings, reflection on the past year, and fervent prayers for prosperity, peace, and harmony in the year ahead.
Deeply rooted in the animistic beliefs of the Lepcha tribe, this festival is crucial for preserving and promoting their unique traditions, folklore, and rituals, thereby strengthening their cultural identity. Shamans (Mun and Bongthing Padim) perform intricate ceremonies, offering prayers to deities, ancestors, and nature. During Namsoong, a vital part of the celebration involves offering thanks to the ancestors, remembering their guidance, and seeking their continued blessings for the coming year. Namsoong also fosters a strong sense of community and unity, as families and friends gather to share traditional food, enjoy vibrant cultural performances, and engage in traditional games. It beautifully highlights the Lepcha people's deep-rooted connection with nature and the cycles of life, acknowledging the harmonious relationship between humans and their environment.

While Namsoong is traditionally observed according to the Tibetan lunar calendar, typically starting around the 29th of the tenth month and continuing for about a week, often coinciding with the Losoong festival in December or early January, here at Moonbeam Farmstay, we honor the rhythms of nature directly. Our celebration of Namsoong coincides with the ripening of our precious millet harvest – a time of true abundance and gratitude right here on our land. This ensures an authentic and deeply connected experience for all our guests, aligning our celebrations with the natural bounty we receive.
